GTA 6 Might Only Reach 720p Resolution on Xbox Series S

"GTA 6 might be limited to 720p on Xbox Series S due to hardware limitations, with Digital Foundry's John Linneman confirming Rockstar's focus on higher resolutions and ray-tracing effects for Xbox Series X and PS5."

GTA 6 Reach only reach 720p resolution on XBOX series S

Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has an earnings call scheduled for August 8, 2024. Fans are eagerly waiting for any information they will provide about GTA 6 during that conference call. It has been over eight months since the GTA 6 trailer was released, and Rockstar is being secretive about their most anticipated game, Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).

While the gaming community and GTA fans are eagerly awaiting any news of GTA 6, given that the game will be releasing after a decade, they have high expectations for it to be revolutionary. However, a former Rockstar Tech head has warned that GTA 6 might disappoint fans because there has not been a significant technological leap in consoles like there was in the past. He advises players to set their expectations lower.

Digital Foundry roasting XBOX Series S

What's the Hype About Xbox Series S 720p Resolution?

Popular game analyst John Linneman from Digital Foundry stated that Rockstar Games will only provide 720p resolution for the Xbox Series S. He explains in a short podcast why the Xbox Series S supports only 720p in a logical way.

It’s probably a PS5, Xbox Series X target in the trailer, I would say. So, we could assume maybe 720p target Series S. -- John LinnemanRay
Ray Tracing Effect in GTA 6

In the podcast, he mentioned that Rockstar Games is prioritizing the game for the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. He pointed to the beach scene and car scene, where many NPCs and significant light effects are present, particularly in the Miami Club part. To maintain these effects, Rockstar Games won’t compromise by removing them for the Xbox Series S. Instead, they plan to downgrade the resolution to 720p for Xbox Series S users.

While the Xbox Series S is a lighter version of the Xbox Series X, the hardware is somewhat similar in both consoles.

Although the GTA 6 company claimed that the smaller console can also produce 1440p resolution, Linneman explained that this won't be possible due to the extensive use of ray-tracing effects (RTX) in the upcoming title. These effects are demanding and cannot be supported by smaller consoles like the Xbox Series S due to software limitations.

Conclusion

Rockstar Games has excelled at optimizing games for smaller consoles since GTA V, there's no doubt they can do it again this time. It's just a matter of time before we receive real and official news. Remember that the Xbox 360 had only 512 MB of RAM, yet GTA V ran smoothly on it. This demonstrates that Rockstar often thinks ahead of its time.
